ISLAMABAD, Feb 11: Federal Government has finally conceded to the decades old demand of India that Pakistan give her transit trade facility for her exports to Afghanistan and Central Asian States by land route, it is learnt through reliable sources . The official announcement in this regard is expected on February 14,†the sources said.
All the past governments in Pakistan had rejected this Indian demand. It was their apprehension that Pakistan would be a loser in allowing India to trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian states, besides the danger of increase in smuggling. There was also the risk to national security because of the heavy Indian traffic through the country. The Indian Government has now succeeded in persuading the PPP government to allow it to use Pakistani land route instead of long and costly Iranian route to reach Afghanistan and Central Asian States.
Official sources disclosed to this correspondent that India is likely to start using Wagah border and Pakistani roads to Afghanistan from the next financial year, starting 1st of July, 2012.
Meanwhile, it is also apprehended that the list of tradable goods through Wagah border between India and Pakistan and beyond, will increase three-folds as a result of the talks during the forthcoming visit to Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad of Indian Minister for Commerce leading a 200- member delegation.
The Indian delegation is scheduled to reach Lahore on Sunday, 12th February. In Lahore the delegation will visit ìExhibition Indiaî at EXPO Center Lahore, have talks with Lahore Chamber of Commerce and also attend a dinner same night in Governor House Lahore, being hosted by the Federal Minister for Commerce, Mukhdoom Amin Faheem.
Next day, the Indian delegation will depart for Karachi. On 13th February, 2012, Indian and Pakistani industrialists and businessmen will have talks for the promotion of trade and investment between the two countries. Karachi Chamber will host a banquet in honor of Indian Commerce Minister and his delegation.
The Indian Minister for Commerce will also call on the Prime Minister of Pakistan and will lead his delegation in the trade talks between the two countries.
When this correspondent asked the officials regarding the tradable goods, he stated that at present 80 items are being traded through Wagah border between the two neighboring countries.† It is estimated that as a result of Pak-India Commerce talks this number will be increased around two and a half times. These officials maintained that India had blocked access of Pakistan to the European market. Now India would remove its objections.† In return Pakistan is likely to accept the decades old demand of India to allow her the transit trade facility through Pakistan.

Nandita in a Paki Movie

A Pakistani film about a boy who inadvertently strays into Indian territory will be the first ever to premiere simultaneously in both countries whose ties are often strained, the film’s Pakistani producer said.

Ramchand Pakistani, inspired by a real-life incident, examines the emotional turmoil of an eight-year-old boy and his father after they cross into India and are jailed, while the mother in Pakistan is left waiting to see their fate.

The film’s release in India and Pakistan on August 1 will be a rare event considering political rivalry has limited cultural interaction between the two nations.

“It is a very rare example of creative constructive collaboration between both countries,” producer Javed Jabbar said at a press conference on Sunday, a day after the film was screened at the Osian’s Cinefan film festival in New Delhi.

Jabbar, whose daughter Mehreen directed Ramchand Pakistani, said Pakistan allowed filming to take place close to sensitive border areas in southern Sindh province while India let the crew visit a jail in western Gujarat state to maintain “visual and narrative authenticity”.

Indian actress Nandita Das, known for her roles in bold, unconventional productions, plays the mother in the film whose main characters are from Pakistan’s minority Hindu community.

When Indian troops find the boy Ramchand and his father who comes looking for him, they suspect them of being spies.
